This beautiful fellow has clearly had a very hard week as a graduate student, and is relaxing on Friday night.

bad medicine

Here is a peacock (or turkey? I'm not sure) and a lovely capybara. I think the discerning bird is telling the capybara terrible secrets. Being friendly, the capybara listens to the emo bird's tale of woe.

Do I need a shave?

Beautiful mystacial vibrissae. Tell me, Mr. Capybara, what does your barrel cortex look like?

Nose!

The white patch is believed to be a scent glad that the capybara uses to mark his territory of cute.

who nose what he's up to

The capybara is a mammal, and they must keep their big noses above water if they want to take in oxygen!

The lonely child

He looks in the distance and asks "Are you my mommy?"

Free! Free at last....

Here are beautiful capybaras in the wild in Venezuela. Run, capybaras! Don't let Chavez nationalize your industry!

Odd animal friends

For reasons I've never really understood, frequently zoos will have capybaras and tapirs be roommates. What an odd couple!

Fetch! Or my, what beautiful eyes you have

This capybara is either playing fetch or collecting material for his house made of sticks. Note the dark, beautiful eyes.

Introducing... the capybara baby!

A baby capybara is perhaps the most adorable animal in the entire world. Babies start out small, but quickly grow to full-capybara-size. During this time, they are often a handful. I anticipate many more capybara babies in the future!

Sleeeeepy

I was like this guy last night, so I didn't post! Here is a wonderful fellow, exhausted from a day of being cute.

A very big friend

Several people have commented on the size of the noble capybara. It's difficult to appreciate just how hugely wonderful they are until you see one next to an adult human. A robust capybara can grow to 140 pounds... That's a lot of animal to love!

Wonderful wonderful sun

This capybara is enjoying the wonderful sun. Capybaras seem to spend half their time in the sun, half their time in the water, and ALL OF THEIR TIME being cute. A friend of the capybara points out the beautful teeth and wonderful, soft tum of this fellow.

Safe and sound

Frequently you will see pictures of the noble Capybara with a bird of some sort sitting on him or her. The purpose of this bird is still a mystery to capybaraologists. Are they there to pick off bugs? Defend the Capybara from other animals? Help the capybara avoid entering into unfavorable legal transactions? I like to think that they are protector birds, and do all of the above.

Such a noble creature

I am always amazed at how wise and noble a family of capybara can look!

"Capybara Portrait"

This is a classic portrait shot of a lovely capybara, from Tu99 (Roger)'s photostream.

Every Day, a new capybara picture

Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent in the world. It is related to agouti, chinchillas, coyphillas, and guinea pigs. Its common name, derived from Kapiÿva in the Guarani language means "master of the grasses" while its scientific name, hydrochaeris, is Greek for "water hog".

Every day, I hope to post a new photo of the most wonderful of animals, the capybara!
